The Protestant temple in the Ardèche river basin in the Vivarais, in the
heartland of Protestantism in
France's mountainous south-east, remained free
and open long after the
revocation of Edict of Nantes in 1685. This made it
an attractive centre for
Huguenot worship in France from the late-1600s
during the years of the
"Desert" - and throughout the eighteenth century.
Among the many worshipers
at the eglise reformée in the Ardèche can be found
a family called Clauzier,
and the Vivarais region of France seems to have
been their homeland. The
first of them to appear on record is Jehan
Clauzier (bap 18 November 1582),
son of Vincent, from the parish of La
Bastie d'Andaure. Jehan left
descendants in the area, and they are the
subject of this
article.
Clausiers from Ardèche in the Vivarais possibly joined the Exodus,
departing
their homeland for foreign parts. However, some obviously
remained, as
their records continue in the Ardèche well into the 1700s.
